#GirlMoney, not #GirlMath – The MAIAs
As we enter the second year of a global cost of living crisis, sobering data reminds us of its disproportionate impact on women.
A report by Standard Life in the UK reveals that in 2023, significantly more women than men say they’re finding their financial situation difficult (31% vs 19%) and that their overall economic positivity has also declined substantially – from 44% in 2021 to 33% in 2022. (Men’s financial positivity suffered much less by contrast – dipping from 54% to 50%.)
These are worrying findings, suggesting as they do that the gap between men and women when it comes to money awareness, general finances and retirement savings – already a huge concern – is now more pressing than ever.
For all the pink poise of this summer’s Barbie movie and Tay-Tay’s billion-dollar concert tour, women are still being left behind, when it could be so different.
The answer isn’t more jokes about #GirlMath. The answer is more #GirlMoney – because if there’s one piece that could have a disproportionate impact on women’s empowerment efforts, it’s fixing the money gender gap.
