The world is on fire! Record temperatures and extreme weather events are becoming part of our everyday lives. Sustainability has risen to the top of the agenda. There is growing awareness of the need to act responsibly to avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change, water shortages and biodiversity loss, and to ensure that future generations have a world worth living in.
Yet there are very few children’s books today that talk about sustainability impacts and financial decisions. My book is designed to fill this gap.
It aims to demystify the role of money in the world, explain where money comes from, how it has evolved and how it can be used to serve our needs and support our collective progress. It aims to empower children to make smart decisions about how they use their money – now and in the future – by showing them a range of options, and how each option might affect their happiness and the world around them.
My book is designed for young children, between 7-11 years old, an age group that still enjoys being read to. It is designed to answer their questions, to be a conversation starter, to spark a dialogue between parents and children on what it means to manage money sustainably. At that age, books are often read several times, helping to deepen learning through repetition. As they get older, children are also likely to pick up different messages each time they read it.
Through story-telling, my book aims to tap into children’s imagination: part comic, part factbook, packed with beautiful and engaging illustrations to capture their attention and de-mystify a subject matter that can be seen as cold and distant.
